Eurocorps takes over ISAF mission

On this occasion, Lieutenant General Py invites media representative interested in this topic to a press talk shortly before he will leave for Kabul.

The main task of ISAF is to support the Afghan interim government in establishing and maintaining internal safety on the basis of a UN mandate. In addition, ISAF performs reconstruction aid measures in the country in the framework of civil-military cooperation. The elections scheduled for 9 October 2004, the planned set-up of additional Provincial Reconstruction Teams and the developing expansion of the ISAF area of responsibility are factors presenting a special challenge for the Eurocorps.

The first Eurocorps soldiers have left Strasbourg in early July already in order to prepare the take-over of the Kabul headquarters.

The 360 soldiers (male and female) of the multinational corps headquarters in Strasbourg have undergone several months of specific training for their mission of safeguarding the fragile peace in the Hindukush region during the next six months.
