Eurocorps Commander in Poland for an official visit

Poland's honour guard salutes for Lieutenant General Pedro Pitarch

Warsaw (Poland), 22nd April 2008

Today the Spanish Lieutenant General Pedro PITARCH, Eurocorps Commander, started an official visit to Poland in response to an invitation of the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, General Franciszek GĄGOR.

General PITARCH had the opportunity to meet not only General GĄGOR, but also the Commander of the Land Forces, General Waldemar SKRZYPCZAK, and the Secretary of State, StanisŁaw JERZY KOMOROWSKI, to discuss on the situation of Eurocorps.

Tomorrow the Eurocorps Commander will visit, in the city of Orzysz, units belonging to the 15th Mechanized Brigade of Giżycko, which participated last November in Wildflecken (Germany) in Eurocorps' main exercise, Common Tenacity 2007, where 1200 soldiers from 14 nations were present under the command of Eurocorps.

Poland is one of the so-called “Eurocorps Sending Nations” and intends to reinforce largely its contribution to this European military unit in 2009. There are currently three 3 Polish officers working permanently as Eurocorps members and this number should increase to eighteen.

Polish units participate in Eurocorps' exercises on a regular basis.
