Général de Division Jean-Philippe WIRTH was born on February 17, 1948 in MARRAKECH (Morocco).
In September 1965 he entered the Military Special Academy in Saint-Cyr where he chose the artillery branch. In October 1967 he joined the Artillery School in CHALONS-sur-MARNE. When he finished this course in March 1969, he was assigned to the 16th Artilley Regiment in TRIER (GE) where he was successively platoon chief in the training branch, reconnaissance officer and gun director of the first battery. In May 1972 he joined the Artillery School in CHALONS-sur-MARNE and served as a drillmaster for NCOs, then for reserve officers starting their military service. In May 1974 he was assigned to the 11th Artillery Regiment in OFFENBURG (GE) where he was deputy chief of the training branch; later he took the command of the third battery. In August 1977 he was appointed aide-de-camp of the Army Chief of Staff until June 1979. Then he was assigned to the Army G3 where he worked in the "situation" cell of the Operational Center "Army". In September 1981 he entered the 95th promotion of the Command and General Staff College in Paris. In June 1983, he joined the 2nd Artillery Regiment in LANDAU (GE) where he served as chief of the "training-activities" branch. In August 1985, he was reassigned to the Army Staff where he worked in the "Plans-Finances" department, in charge of investments programming. In July 1988 he took the command of the 24th Artillery Regiment in REUTLINGEN (GE). Back at the Army Staff in July 1991, he was appointed chief of the "Plans-Studies" branch before taking up the head of the "Plans-Finances" department in summer 1992. In September 1995 he joined the 48th session of the National Defence Studies College (IHEDN) and of the 45th session of the War College (CHEM). In July 1996 he became DCOM-OPS of the 2nd Armoured division in VERSAILLES. In September 1997, he was appointed DCOS "Studies-Plans-Finances" in the Army Staff. General Jean-Philippe WIRTH is married and father of six children.
